A Quick Way to Up Your Living Room Game

After being away from home for a long stint, do you ever come back and look at your space with differently? It’s almost as if you’ve stepped into someone else’s home, suddenly able to appreciate all the good things, and really notice all the trouble spots.

My first port of call? The living room. Ironically, I’ve shared countless pictures of inspiration for this room on the 101010 Pinterest page. It is a perfectly lovely space as it is. But it’s just a little…unremarkable. After staying in beautifully designed hotels throughout the world, I want to make my living room feel more…special. The easiest way to elevate a space quickly is to bring in truly special pieces that immediately inject personality, history and a distinct point of view.

Here, I'm going to offer you some tips for giving your living room timeless look and feel. Read on to learn more.

A great place start is with your layout.

The ideal is to have the furniture away from the walls to allow movement through and around the room. If your space is more limited, consider having a variety of furniture types, such as a chaise sofa and a pair of chairs. This will allow you to play with layout, whilst keeping the feeling of open space. Cocktail chairs make a great design addition, providing extra seats for when visitors call. My top picks are further down on this page!

Try to Future Proof Your Home

_______

Even a hardened interior nerd like me can’t justify decorating every year, so choosing a sophisticated palette and focal furniture will stand you in good stead for years to come. Here are some of my favourite, neutral and timeless palettes that I am working in to designs right now!

Clever storage is a great solution to make the room feel more spacious and add detail. Take a look at the example below from Jenna Sue Design’s blog, where a beautiful reading nook has been created with plenty of storage to boot!

Although drawers are great for hiding items, open shelving provides the chance for you to show off your treasured possessions or add a feature to a room. A contemporary take on timber storage elevates these logs to a focal point.

I love the contemporary feel of the metal frame, floating wood shelves above from Wayfair.
